Independence Day in Highlands, North Carolina offers a good time for everybody. Located in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, Highlands boasts a lot of natural beauty. There is a lot to see and do in Highlands, especially on July 4.
Independence Day Celebration
Independence Day in Highlands is a day-long celebration with multiple events. At 9 a.m., the local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops will hold their annual rocket launch at the town baseball field. The Scouts will provide all of the materials needed to make a water rocket out of a shipping tube and a soda bottle. Participants who want to bring their own bottles should note that they need to use 20 oz. bottles. The last rockets will be launched just before the games begin.
The field games start at 11 a.m., and both adults and children are welcome. Visitors can also sit in one of the fire trucks belonging to the Highlands Fire Department, and they can also check out the MAMA helicopter.
The annual Rotary BBQ also starts at 11 a.m., and it will be held at the Kelsey Hutchinson Park. There will also be lunch at the baseball field. The Wilson BBQ plate is always a crowd pleaser. The Rotary Club will hold its Annual Rubber Ducky Derby at Mill Creek at 1 p.m. Anyone who wants to take part can buy a rubber ducky and enter it. The Rotary Club is offering prizes for the Derby’s winner.
At 6 p.m., the band Fish Out of Water will perform at the Kelsey Hutchinson Park. There will be a Patriotic Sing at the Presbyterian Church at 8 p.m. The celebration ends with a fireworks display on Main Street that starts at 9 p.m. For more information, call the Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center at (828) 526-2112.
Stars and Bars Feast
The Highlands Cashiers Chamber Music Festival, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this summer, will be holding its annual “Stars and Bars Feast” on July 2. It will start at 7:15 p.m., and it will be hosted by Lane Cook and Caroline Gilham. Edward Arron and David Coucheron will be performing. The feast includes a cocktail buffet and beef tenderloin.
