Whether you are visiting to witness the vivid color change of the leaves or to attend a host of area festivals, Highlands, NC is the place to be to celebrate all the excitement and activity of the fall season.

Each weekend in Highlands abounds with a number of things to do in the surrounding region to suit a wide variety of interests. Just a quick glance in any direction and you’ll experience the signs of fall’s burst of color can be viewed all around as visitors flock to the area to witness the spectacular show when the leaves change color. The time varies per region annually, but generally late September or early October is the initial phase. Nearby mountain vistas like Sunset Rock and Whiteside Mountain are great spots to catch glimpses of the show.

Festivals To Celebrate the Season

Fall is also time for an array of festivals like the Annual Highlands Own Art & Craft Show. The event, hosted by the Town of Highlands, brings together professional and amateur crafters for the day at the Highlands Civic Center.

Neighboring communities like Dillsboro feature events including the ColorFest in October to showcase fine art and crafts. The event is sponsored by the Dillsboro Merchants Association, in partnership with Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

The sport of fly-fishing is popular in the area’s rivers with the peak season ending in October for Brown, Rainbow and Wild Brook Trout fish.

And Halloween is a big event in Highlands! The Annual Highlands All Hallows Eve Celebration, sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, encompasses the entire downtown. The streets are closed to vehicle traffic to allow trick-or-treaters access to canvass the area. Many of the area businesses get in on the action with costumes, themes and entertainment. This is an event you don’t want to miss.

Be sure not to miss Opening Night and the Sip & Stroll events of the weekend.

Football, Football, Football!
