Here are some top trails in the Highland area from www.highlandhiker.com:
- The Chattooga Narrows Trail is three miles and runs along streams and through North Carolina’s quiet comfort. It ranks moderate in difficulty. You’ll walk along the Chattooga Trail and the Chattooga River Narrows. You’ll cross the Cain Creek on a log and walk along Whiteside Road.
- The Chattooga Loop Trail is two miles and is moderate in difficulty. It begins to the left of the Iron Bridge about seven miles from downtown Highlands.
- The Chattooga River Trail is for hardcore hikers. It is 6.3 miles and is considered difficult. This is nature hiking at its finest. You follow the Chattooga River upstream from the Iron Bridge to Whiteside Cove Road. During most of this hike you’ll pass through a rhododendron canopy.
- Granite City is a breeze at .08 miles. It is considered easy. It is a popular bouldering area. Narrow rock “streets” lead to unexpected caves and ledges, which may not be suitable for those who have anxiety about heights.
- Satulah Mountain is a moderate 1.6-mile trek along an old rock bed to a peak south of Highlands. This hike takes you to an elevation of 4,543 feet and gives you a 270-degree view to the south, east and west. You can see the Piedmont, the Blue Valley and Rabun Bald.
- Sunset Road is easy and goes a little more than a half mile. It leads to a natural cliff-side amphitheater.
- Whiteside Mountain – a moderate two-miler – gives you the big view. You’ll get a view of the green state sign showing you the way to the mountains. This trail goes along Whiteside Mountain.
