Visitors to the town of Highlands, N.C. will find that this area has a lot to offer. Whether visiting to experience the beautiful hiking trails in the surrounding Southern Blue Ridge Mountains or to enjoy a number of area festivals or points of interest, there is plenty to do here.
Now is a great time to visit since the area’s elevation at 4,118 feet keeps the climate cool in the summer and early fall. The town’s population ranges from 3,200 year-round residents to over 18,000 during the summer months.
You’ll find residents and visitors alike strolling Highland’s quaint streets to visit the great restaurants and boutiques along Main Street. Stop in and enjoy lunch or dinner at The Wild Thyme Gourmet after finding a treasure to take home from Scudder’s Gallery.
The more adventurous visitor must include Ravenel Park on the to-do-list. Take a hike on one of the many trails and end at Sunset Rock with a picnic overlooking downtown Highlands. The region, part of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, offers a wealth of outdoor activities to enjoy from Bridal Veil Falls to Dry Falls.
Highlands and the surrounding region are chock-full of cultural venues. Peruse a local pottery exhibit at The Bascom, which features visual arts. Take in a traveling Broadway production at the Smokey Mountain Center for the Performing Arts in nearby Franklin.
Summer is also a great time to tour the Highlands Botanical Gardens to enjoy the beautiful array of blooms. Learn more about the natural heritage of the Highlands Plateau at the Highlands Biological Station featuring the Highlands Nature Center.
In addition, outdoor festivals abound in the area for all interests. In June, rev your engines for the Highlands Motoring Festival or the Village Square Art & Craft Show. In July, make sure you bring a lawn chair and enjoy the tunes of Friday Night Live at the Highlands Town Square. Don’t miss the July 4th Fireworks sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce. A number of other annual events like the Three River Fly Fishing Tournament and the Highlands Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-Off draw large crowds to the picturesque area.
