Just about everywhere you turn, it’s beginning to look like the holidays here in Highlands, N.C. The busy season brings visitors from all over to spend quality time with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or others to ring in the New Year.

Winter Wonderland

You might get lucky and hear “it’s snowing!” during the holiday season here, as Highlands receives a foot of snow on average each year. The surrounding mountains usually receive a little more, making winter photos even more picturesque.

Thanksgiving is a popular weekend in the area from families hosting Thanksgiving dinners to designating the long holiday weekend as a mini family vacation. There is a lot to do in the area to celebrate the start of the holiday season!

The area’s retail businesses are all aglow with festive décor to delight shoppers looking for the perfect gift for someone special. Highlands has an impressive selection of chic boutiques, artisan studios and quaint small businesses to help Santa fulfill many a wish list.

Local Highlands Events

Usher in the holiday spirit with the Annual Highlands Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony with a special appearance by Santa! The event takes place at the Highlands Methodist Church usually during the last weekend in November.

Then, on the first weekend in December, all eyes turn to the three-block route along Main Street for the Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade. Spectators line Main Street for the daytime parade, which features approximately 80 units representing local organizations, businesses and schools.

Both events are sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce.

A host of other businesses around town feature holiday activities such as Christmas at Tom Sawyer Tree Farm. The month-long event includes an elf village and carriage rides.
