The Park On Main Hotel names new general manager John Woods to oversee the daily operations of the property in Highlands, North Carolina. Taking over as general manager is a homecoming of sorts for Woods. Although he is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, Woods’ family spent many years vacationing in the region. His parents eventually relocated to the area when they retired.
“Then slowly my siblings and I all followed them here,” he said.
Woods began his new role as general manager in January 2017. And he has hit the ground running. The slower spring season in Highlands allowed Woods time to learn the property and get up to speed before the summer rush. The typical population of Highlands is known to increase to approximately 20,000 during the summer.
“I’ve been able to get in the rooms and view what goes on from the guest experience,’ Woods said. “I go in and sit on the sofa for 20 minutes to see what guests see and figure out what we can improve.”
He believes the hands on approach adds important finishing touches to increase customer satisfaction, ultimately leading to returning guests.
“We get a lot of repeat guests who call and tell us they want the same room. So that’s always nice,” Woods said.
Woods spent a decade in the Navy and has lived all over the world. He brings a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry, including resort manager for Wyndham properties. His most recent position was at the White Birch Inn, a bed & breakfast in Clayton, Georgia, about an hour west of Highlands, North Carolina
“The Park On Main Hotel is a little gem in this town,” Woods said.
The hotel’s pet-friendly policy is a welcome surprise for Woods. He especially enjoys greeting all the dogs visiting the property. And he adds, that the housekeeping staff works hard to ensure each room appears as if a pet has never been in the space.
The hotel’s mascot Mr. Pickles, a black Scottish terrier, ranks supreme. However, The Park On Main Hotel partners with the local Humane Society to foster dogs until a permanent home is located. A new pair of foster dogs is expected to arrive at the hotel soon.
Feel At Home At the Park On Main Hotel
As guests arrive at The Park On Main, the goal of the staff to make everyone feel as if they are walking into our home, Woods explains.
“Like they are family,’ he said. “We want them to feel at home here.”
And it’s not uncommon to find guests reading a book in the lobby by the fireplace, and just relaxing. Woods likes each guest to leave with a true sense of southern hospitality.
An added benefit for Woods is being familiar with Highlands the various activities attracting tourists to the region each season. The list includes cooler temperatures of the mountains in the summer, being known as the Land of Waterfalls and recognized as a popular spot to view the leaves change color in the fall. In addition, Woods points out that the area is noted for food and wine events along with shopping.
Excitement is beginning to mount this year since a total lunar eclipse is scheduled to occur on August 21, 2017. Highlands is slated to be in the track of total darkness for just over two minutes during the eclipse. The hotel has already begun receiving reservations for the date.
So make no mistake Woods said, The Park On Main Hotel is a busy place. He strives to be a hands on manager as much as possible, from mingling with guests to helping the housekeepers or maintenance crew.
“Whatever needs to be done, we do,” Woods said.
