Pets are members of the family and are often included in vacation planning and other outings. While some families still opt to leave the pets at home with a sitter or board them at a local kennel, more places are becoming “pet-friendly.” And yes, pet owners are paying attention since they know Fido and Fluffy are welcome!

There are a number of things pet owners need to know before checking in with the furry members of the family.

Check the Rules

When making reservations, be sure you alert the hotel that you will be traveling with pets. It’s the time to check to see if there are any restrictions for the type and size of pets allowed at the facility. The establishment may require additional fees for pets upfront and staff can address those questions during the booking process.

The facility may also have specific requirements about keeping pets on a leash while walking around the property. The rules may also specify that pets must never be left unattended in guest rooms.

Allowed Spaces

There may be areas of the hotel property where pets are not allowed, like on the furniture, during the owner’s stay. Check with the hotel’s staff upon arrival to identify those areas. Also, find out where pets are free to roam in order to relieve themselves. The hotel may have space set aside specifically for pets, so become familiar with the location. Find out if the hotel has a stash of bags for cleanup purposes just in case you forgot to pack some or run out during the trip.

What to Pack

Although the new environment of the hotel room may be fun for everyone, pets may feel a bit more comfortable with their favorite toy, pillow or blanket. Make sure to have extra treats on hand since your pet will have to demonstrate extra good behavior while at the hotel. For instance, if pets are used to curling up with their owner to watch television but can’t do that while at the hotel, an extra treat might help soothe them over without much drama.

There’s a lot to consider at pet-friendly accommodations, but early planning can make the stay enjoyable for all, especially those on four legs.
