Fall-ing in Love
Fall-ing in Love with Highlands
There’s something undeniably magical about autumn in Highlands. As golden leaves drift through crisp mountain air and sunbeams dance on waterfalls, it’s easy to feel swept up in nature’s grandest performance. Tucked high in the Southern Appalachian Mountains at 4,118 feet, Highlands offers one of the most elevated experiences east of the Mississippi—both literally and figuratively.
Each winding road and hidden trail leads to unforgettable views and secret splendors. According to the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, nature lovers won’t want to miss these breathtaking destinations:
🍂 Bridal Veil Falls – Just 2.5 miles west of town along U.S. Highway 64, this enchanting 60-foot waterfall in the Nantahala National Forest invites you to drive under its cascading curtain for a truly cinematic moment.
🍂 Dry Falls – Don’t let the name fool you—this dramatic 75-foot waterfall is anything but dry. Located just outside town on U.S. 64, Dry Falls lets hikers walk behind a roaring wall of water without ever getting soaked (unless you want to).
🍂 Secret Falls – Still a hidden gem for many, this 50-foot cascade plunges into a serene pool deep within the forest. Getting there is half the adventure: From Main Street, take Horse Cove Road, turn right on Walking Stick Road, veer right at the fork, then turn right on FR 4567. Keep your eyes peeled for the blue sign—Secret Falls will be on the left.
Of course, adventure in Highlands isn’t limited to hiking. With nearby opportunities for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing, the great outdoors is always within reach. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls or simply taking in the view, our mountain town offers the perfect escape for every kind of explorer.
And when the day’s adventures are done, return to The Park on Main—your elegant, pet-friendly retreat in the heart of Highlands. Here, the only thing more colorful than the fall foliage is the memory you’ll take home.
